When it's time to shop for a new bed or bed frame, you will find many options. With so many beds to choose from, finding a suitable bed will likely entail some research.
Will a divan bed work in your small room? Or would a simple metal bed frame be a better option? The best type of bed depends on your preferences and your bedroom. Our guide below will help you find a bed or bed frame that is right for you.
What Are Divan Beds?
Divan beds are our best-selling bed type. Divan bed bases are extremely practical, as they can include storage. The storage makes them much more than just a sleeping platform, and they are especially useful in rooms with limited space. It is surprising how many toys, out-of-season clothes, towels, or bedding can fit into a bed base!
A divan bed base is essentially a wooden box covered with a soft fabric. The highest quality divan bases are made from sturdy, responsibly sourced timber. Unlike metal or wooden bed frames, which come in a single piece, divan bed bases are often made in two sections, placed next to each other to form a single platform. This makes them easy to transport and lighter to lift than if they were a single unit.
Divan Bed Options
At Cheap Bed Sale, we sell divan beds with or without a mattress, with or without storage, and with or without a headboard.
Choosing whether you want a mattress or headboard is quite an easy decision, but you will have to think about the storage, depending on where you will position the bed in your room.
We offer beds with various storage options; you can have drawers on either side of the bed, at the foot of the bed, or on both sides of the bed.
If the bed will be pushed against a wall on one side or placed close to a wall, it makes sense to have deep drawers only on the exposed side. If your room is small, and there will be little space around the bed on both sides, having the drawer at the bed’s foot makes more sense. For this situation, we also have beds with slider storage compartments, which require less room, as you do not have to pull the drawer out.
As well as the practicality aspect, divan bed bases have the advantage that they are often more comfortable than other types of frames, as the firm platform gives the mattress a totally level surface. This is especially helpful for thicker mattresses, like memory foam. It gives an equal level of support to every part of the mattress.
There's a lot of room for personalisation with a divan, as you can choose a matching headboard or an entirely different style. If you want to give your room a makeover down the line, you can change the headboard rather than buying another bed.
Our divan bases come in many diverse materials, from faux leather to chenille, to crushed velvet. Given the vast choices of fabrics and colours, divans are amazingly adaptable and customisable to fit in with the existing decor.
Divan Bed Assembly
Assembling a divan bed is straightforward. Most divan beds come with easy-to-follow instructions from the manufacturer to guide you through the assembly process.
Most divans come in two parts, and after removing all the packaging, you’ll need to turn the parts upside down and insert the castors or feet into the provided hole at each corner. You can use a small hammer to lightly knock them into place, if necessary.
Once the feet are secure, the bases are ready to fix together. Divan bases will usually come with link bars or U-clips, both of which are simple to attach. U-clips do not require tools, but a link bar may need to be secured using a screwdriver, or the bed manufacturer may provide an Allen key.
When you've connected the divan parts and put the base the right way up, it's ready for the mattress.
Bed Bases Only?
Frequently, our customers won't need to buy an entire bed, comprising the base, mattress, and headboard, and only want to buy a base. This could be your best option - maybe you have a mattress you are pleased with, or perhaps you want a specialist mattress such as orthopaedic or memory foam and want to buy the mattress separately. At Cheap Bed Sale, you can buy any of our bed frames separately, so you never have to spend more than is necessary.
Bed Frame Options
Other than divan bed bases, we offer many other types, including upholstered, wooden, and metal.
Upholstered Bed Frames
During the nineties and noughties, the demand for upholstered beds declined as the more minimalistic wood, and metal frames became trendy. However, in recent years, sales of upholstered beds have increased, as no other type of frame offers the luxury of an upholstered fabric bed.
Upholstered bed frames are typically made from wood, then covered with padding for comfort and finished with a plush material like crushed velvet, chenille or the more sophisticated-looking faux leather.
Manufacturers will often add studs or buttons to fabric beds for a stylish and elegant finish.
Because upholstered beds come in many diverse materials and colours, this type of bed frame will fit well when any decor, from traditional to modern.
Compared to wooden or metal frames, a fabric bed base offers more comfort, warmth, and customisation options.
Wooden Bed Frames
Wooden bed frames are timeless, and never go out of fashion. As we enter the early 2020s, wood bed frames are still as prevalent as ever. The choice of woods, colours, styles, and finishes is vast. Whether you want a homely rustic look or a sleek contemporary design, there is a wooden bed frame that will achieve the exact effect you are after.
As well as coming in a wide range of styles, wooden bed frames also come with wide-ranging price tags. The price you pay will depend mainly on the wood type and the intricacy of the design. You can find wood bed bases that are more like a handcrafted work of art than a piece of necessary furniture, or you can buy a wooden frame made with reasonably cheap wood like pine or fir with a way lower price tag. Affordable pine beds are always a favourite choice, along with classic oak.
Some people think that a wooden bed only looks good in a traditional-themed home. But wooden beds can also look great in modern settings. You can paint a wooden frame to match modern decor, and good quality wood will add character to any bedroom.
One of the attractive aspects of a wooden bed frame is it is environment-friendly, so you can sleep well knowing your bed frame choice has contributed to the planet's wellbeing.
Wooden bed frames are less inclined to squeaking and are more enduring than metal frames. This also makes them more expensive; metal frames are much cheaper.
Metal Bed Frames
When looking for a bed frame, you'll need to think about how it will look against the room's décor. If your room is decorated in a contemporary style, a traditional carved wooden rustic style frame would likely look out of place. The main benefits of metal bed frames are the low-price tag, and they will fit in with just about any existing decor.
A metal bed frame will last for years and requires little maintenance to keep it looking as good as it did when you bought it. Unlike wood or fabric frames which can stain and be hard to clean, a metal bed frame will only require an occasional wipe with a damp cloth to keep it dust and stain-free.
Metal bed frames come in plenty of distinct designs and shapes to be sure you will find a frame with the looks you're after. An elegant metal headboard will transform the appearance of a bedroom. Metal frames also come in a surprising variety of colours, from their natural steely grey to gloss painted in white, black, or less widely available brighter colours.
Metal bed frames are solid and sturdy and able to support lots of weight. They are a good option if you're on the heavy side and don't want a reinforced bed frame that will take up additional space in a small room.
Metal beds are perfect for a child, as you can paint them a bright colour, they are effortless to clean and take up little space.
The low-price tag of metal bed frames makes them ideal for first time home buyers, students, or anyone on a budget. Cheap metal frames are made from durable powder-coated metal tubing, making them light and easy to move.
Bed Bases with Storage
Divan bed bases with incorporated draws are extremely popular because of their handy storage, but they are not the only bed bases with built-in storage. If you don’t like the look of a divan, there are Ottoman and sleigh storage beds to consider.
Sleigh beds with storage usually have drawers incorporated into the base, like traditional divan beds. Sleigh beds have been around for hundreds of years and are named due to their distinctive sleigh look with a curved headboard and footboard.
This style of sleigh beds extends many benefits. The add a solid, durable presence to a bedroom. You'll find them manufactured from attractive wood, or upholstered. Many people love sleigh beds as when in bed they get a comfortable cocooned experience. Because they have a curved head and foot, this adds height at both ends, so a sleeper feels secure and protected.
On the other hand, Ottoman beds are beds that work with gas-lift hydraulics, which raise the entire base for storage space. An Ottoman provides a larger storage capacity than a drawer storage bed because it utilizes all the area underneath the bed.
An Ottoman base will open from either the foot end of the bed or from one side. They're an ideal storage bed in a small room, as there are no drawers to open, which requires additional space. They are also a good choice for guest rooms, box rooms, or converted lofts, where there may not be room for extra furniture.
Because most Ottoman bases are powered by gas-lift hydraulics, minimal effort is needed to access the items stored. Once the bed is open, it will stay open until you're ready to close it.
Like Divan and upholstered beds, Ottoman bases are available in a wide choice of colours and materials.
Helping to keep a bedroom clutter-free, an Ottoman bed frame helps you enjoy a relaxing space to sleep and unwind.
